Decorating or redesigning any part of your home should not be thought of as being an expensive and complicated activity. To minimize the amount of effort involved you should check out the five themes listed below.

Ethnic Design: An ethnically styled living room would be awash with fabrics and furnishings made by traditional craftsmen around the world. With more of us now concerned about the welfare of the world’s poor, as well as the environmental aspect of choosing home furniture, an ethic design can perfectly illustrate your tastes and beliefs. When shopping for any traditional handicrafts be sure that they are part of a Fair Trade scheme and have been manufactured out of renewable materials.

Classic Modern Design: This is one of the most common styles present in people’s homes. Properties which have a classic modern living room enjoy a relaxed ambience with warm textures. Typically the furniture would have sharp distinct edges.

Zen Design: The word Zen is often associated with a very tranquil and serene atmosphere. By creating a Zen themed living space you will be able to ensure that the room is conducive to relaxation. A zen room design would incorporate basic elements such as water and light to create a natural relaxed setting.

Victorian Style Design: Perhaps you would like the timeless appeal of a Victorian styled room. These are often thought of as being highly sophisticated as well as plush and luxurious. It would involve using traditional wooden furniture and warm colors.

Before settling on one design you will need to consider whether it will compliment the rest of your home’s decor. If you are planning on hiring a professional interior designer then always have a budget in mind before making contact.

Living room design is the most exciting and the most thrilling thing to experience as a home maker. A make over for the living room knocks once in a blue moon when your surrounding seems dull and very usual for the eyes. This said make over in your living room (can also be in any room in your house) is also done if the previous design is not appetizing to the senses.

Even if you want to have a hundred percent alternation for your living room, your budget may not permit you to do so.

What are you going to do? I will not let you just sit there, frown, and get older. Here are the easy to follow steps in decorating your living room. The following steps are very simple and very affordable. These alternations wills surely create a fresh ambience for your home. These tips can also make your home seem new and very appealing. These methods are specifically applicable to the living room but these tips can also be efficiently applied to the other rooms of your home.

Here are the tips: Clean all the litter. Throw the things that are not so important and those that are not needed. These things will just be another pack of clutter for your living room if you will restore them. In addition to this, the clutter that will be left will be the main obstacle for the make over system. Removing the clutter should be done one room at a time. This is to assure that you will not get too exhausted.

Another tip in taking out the clutter is to get rid of the stuff that you are not able to use within the past three months. For instance, an appliance (which is taking so much space) can be stored and kept inside a box.

The next thing to do is to move things. Rearrange your displays and flower vases. Rearrangement of these materials will create another look for your living room. This will also give you a clue in which style of arrangement you will prefer.

Another to consider is the rearrangement of the furniture in the rooms of your house. Help from other family members will lighten the task in this step. Proper distribution of tasks can be very useful.

The rearrangement of the sofa’s location can also be done. Everything changes. Yes, if your living room area is small and somewhat limited, the rearrangement will be limited. However, using your critical and creative mind will definitely change something.

In addition to this, pulling the sofa away from your wall will help. The sofa against the wall is a very traditional design for living rooms. The sofa can be pulled to an angle with the television or other appliance.

Limiting yourself in pulling your sofa is not good. You may also turn the seating area in the room in a small angle.

I hope that these living room design tips will be very helpful to you.

Most homeowners decorate their living rooms in harmony with their methods of using that space. A rustic living room is perfect is you prefer your living room to have a comfortable, lived-in look with plenty of decorations that display not only your personality but of the family as well.

Creating a rustic living is not that difficult once you get to familiarize yourself with the basics. You must also take into consideration several factors that will take part in the transformation of your living, like the furniture, style, walls and more.

Getting Started

Firstly, you must pick a style that you want. The first rule in picking the style is to remember that no matter how many or how old the items you plan to place in your living room, the style is not going to look right if these items do not fit together. And so, it is important to select the theme you want to go for. There are several rustic themes, such as: cowboy, farm, Native America, southwestern, western or country. All you have to do is to search for images of these themes and pick the one that best suits your personality. Once you picked the theme you want, you must also remember to stick with it and be consistent.

Next, you must change your carpet. This is necessary to help you determine what kind of flooring you want for your space. Generally, hardwood floors are preferred by most homeowners but you can still opt for a rug. Nevertheless, the choice for the floor covers is still up to you but remember to stay in a budget.

Aside from the floors, the walls can also be changed. What you can do is to either paint them in a certain color appropriate for the style you picked or visit your local store and shop for wallpaper that would be ideal for your rustic living room. However, if you are hesitant about repainting your walls, remember to decorate the room with appropriate artwork or framed prints.

The Furniture

Rustic furniture is usually highlighted by a contemporary look. If you are looking for a rough, unfurnished country look, rustic furniture can provide you with it. Excellent examples of rustic furniture are those made with pine logs. Pine logs are one of the most popular materials used for rustic furniture since they are easily available and not very expensive.

Rustic furniture is unique since the chairs, center tables and sofas are expertly created with detailed elegance that in spite of the materials used, they transform into masterpieces. Nowadays, rustic furniture can still keep to the style of the constructing techniques of the past but could combine them with contemporary designing as well. You can opt for simple, hand-made rustic furniture pieces or utilize rustic designs on modern furniture.

Yet another excellent option is to add few pieces around the room in order to attain a rustic look. When choosing the pieces, remember to be committed in achieving a rustic design. Rustic design normally uses wood, bookcases, tables and mirrors but you can still enhance the look by adding affordable accessories, like twigs or flowers.

No matter what furniture you choose, it must say something about you. Add your personality into the room and remember that the furniture you choose does not have to be in perfect condition. This is the time to bring out your creativity and make your living room a statement of the household’s personality.

A place to bond with your family, the living room is considered as one of the main facets of a common household. It is a place to have family conversations, watching TV, a place to read your favorite books or newspaper, or even a place of play for the kids. This is also a place for you and your friends to have quality time together chatting or as a venue for fun-filled activities.

The lighting you use in your living room can determine the mood of those who stay in it, as well as the comfort that it can bring to your eyes. Too bright, or too dim, can cause eye strain, and might ruin the comfortable mood. Instead of using fixed intensity for lighting, you can use adjustable ones that can be used for different purposes.

The Blend Of Artificial And Natural Lighting

In truth, there are two kinds of lighting for your living room: natural and artificial. Natural lighting comes from outdoor lights during the day. It can be enhanced with proper windows, curtains, and so on. Artificial lighting is electric in nature provided by appliances.

Natural lighting in the living room can be achieved through placement of windows, doorways, skylights, and more. If you want to adjust natural lights coming into your living room, you can use curtains and window tints to achieve the most comfortable natural lighting for you. Most often the case, natural lights can be cumbersome in watching TV or any home entertainment system, so it’s best to place your TV or monitor away from them.

Artificial lighting can vary in both quantity and quality. This depends on the kind of light you chose to place in your living room. Instead of placing only one light source in the middle of the room, you can use your creativity and utilize various lighting available today; such as recessed lighting, down (dim) lights, table or reading lamps, wall lamps, and so on. You can even utilized chandeliers with lighting controls so that you can control the atmosphere of your room.

Planning Is The Key

Advance planning plays an important role in setting up different lighting for various areas of your living room. If it is a combination of a sitting room and home theatre, then it is necessary to provide light controls that will fit the activity.

For example, reading does not require bright lights, since the light will be refracted off the page and might cause eyestrain. You can place a desk light, or a lampshade, besides your couch or lounge chair to provide adequate lighting. If not, you can incorporate lighting controls so that you can set the brightness to the most comfortable one for you.

As with the case of home theatre, lighting control is very important. If you are using video projectors or low-light intensity monitors, then you have to use the proper lighting for quality viewing. Also, being able to adjust the lighting can set the mood depending on the movies you plan to watch. If you are enjoying a horror flick, dim lighting would set the mood just right.

Proper lighting for your living room is necessary considering its importance in your family circle. The perfect lighting will create the best mood in any activity, thus improving the overall functionality of the place.

Choosing a sofa may seem like a breeze for some while others find it a very tedious job. You first need to know that the sofa should look right in the spot you assigned for it. It also should be functional and convenient enough for use and maintenance. There are a few guidelines you need to follow in order to have the perfect sofa for your living room.

Things to Look Out For

What size do you need? Some big sofas may look majestic but your living room might be a bit small to accommodate it well. Very large sofas can overwhelm small living rooms ruining symmetry. The same goes for very small sized sofas. You may need to add another one to compensate for the extra space or the room will look rather empty. Measure the dimensions of your living room first then compare these with the width and height of the sofa you’re eyeing on.

What color do you want? Some trendy sofas may be sporting very bright colors that go out of season fast. This can cost you a lot of extra expenses if you plan to change covers or buy another one that fits the standard. It is better to stick with neutral colors like white, black, brown or beige then accentuate with pillows having a variety of patterns and colors. You will be able to get the look you want by simply changing the accents. You also need to check the color of your room if the sofa will compliment it well. Aim for colors that provide a warm contrast to the room.

What style is good for you? Your sofa needs to fit well into the overall theme of your living room. Oriental or Victorian sofas look very stylish and elegant but may not look as great when placed in contemporary style rooms. You may have the room determine what kind of sofa you need or vice-versa. Observe the material and determine whether you prefer leather, cotton, silk, etc. The fabric should be very comfortable with the frame creating a nice blend. Check the padding and foam as well as the armrest if everything is just right for rest and relaxation.

Maintenance and Buying Tips

How do you intend to clean the sofa? Sofas that double as a bed are very heavy so it will require more than one person to move and clean under it. You may want to get a sofa with legs instead for lower maintenance. If you have pets or children, it is recommended to get a sofa with removable pillows so you can easily remove stains, hairs and furs. The material of the sofa must be convenient enough for you. Leather is easier to clean compared to cotton and silk.

Some sofas are included in living room sets together with one or two chairs o a love seat. Sets always come in the same color and style and will help fill up your living room. Always check if all the pieces conveniently fit in the room. Check the frame and make of the sofa and ask for warranties. You may also want to ask if the seller is able to deliver the sofa to your place directly. Make sure you see several sofas first before deciding which one is the best for you.

With so many options to choose from, you may be left confused about which lamp is right for your living room. There are some factors you need to consider first to properly assess the advantages and effects of the pieces you’re eyeing on. Here are a few simple tips on how to choose the perfect living room lamp that fits your savvy, style and budget.

Assessing the Lamp

First, check the size of the lamp. If you are planning to place it on a table, check if it will fit the surface or that the size is proportional to the table. Very huge lamps set on rather small tables will distort the appearance. Lamp shades that extend beyond the total area of the table are also not recommended. The same goes for very small lamps and big tables.

Next, check the weight of the lamp base. You need to check that the lamp will not easily be toppled over. The base should be proportional to the overall size of the lamp in order to provide ample support and stability. Cheap lamps usually have light bases. You can add stones or sand or fix it on the floor for standalone models to make it heavier and stable.

Check the wattage of the lamp. How many bulbs does the lamp have? If you’re planning to add other light sources in the room, a 25 to 60 watt bulb will usually provide enough light for an area of the living room. However, if you’re only using the single lamp to light up the entire room, you may want to invest in a 100 to 150 watt bulb or a 3-way bulb. This gives sufficient light for reading or security purposes.

Check the style of the lamp. If you’re following a certain theme, you may need to choose the material and design carefully to match the color and accents of the room. The material used should also compliment the main theme. A basic rule is that the lamp base should match the finish well. The color of the base should also blend well or create a nice contrast with the lamp shade.

The Lamp Shade

Check the height of the lamp shade. Ideally, the lamp shade should measure two-thirds the height of the lamp base. The right proportion will create a nice symmetrical appearance. The lamp shade should also effectively hide any hardware and fall properly into the body. As far as table lamps go, the lamp shade should be at eye level when you’re seated without exposing the bulb.

Next, check that the width of the lamp shade is one-half inch or more wider on each side than the base’s widest point. Very wide lamp shades also tend to take up too much space so try looking for those measuring the standard 17 to 20 inches.

As for the lamp shade style, it should be thick enough to properly hide the hardware but thin enough to expose the light. Very thick lamp shades might require you to use more wattage to get the right light you need. Opaque lamp shades are good if you’re only trying to create a dramatic atmosphere. There are pleated and non-pleated styles as well while others sport a variety of patterns and colors. Find the right design that matches your living room.

Designing your living room is a great chance for you to explore your creativity and resourcefulness. You may be surprised to know that some of the best accessories to add are well within your budget. You also don’t need to exert a lot of effort trying to find rare pieces since there are so many alternatives to choose from. Here’s a list of the top five.

The More the Merrier

1. Snow globes. Snow globes never go out of season. Even though they might get more popular during the holidays, people can’t seem to get enough of them. Snow globes depict a very warm and cozy feeling that your living room needs. These are very simple items that still connote a sense of elegance and style. You can line them all up on a shelf for viewing purposes.

What’s more interesting about snow globes is that these can be made into collections. Some have carved or printed names of the countries they came from complete with national flags and colors. The miniature designs are also very unique depicting the source well. The clear crystal ball is one of the reasons why snow globes easily compliments other pieces and colors in the room.

2. Aquarium. An aquarium is one attractive décor that never fails to amuse children and adults. You can choose to place a small goldfish bowl or a large tropical aquarium complete with corals, sharks and seaweeds. This is very effective in producing a sense of tranquility and relaxation that every living room needs. Choose the type that you can easily maintain and clean.

3. Painting, sculpture or rug. You may want to invest in a big painting or sculpture which will serve as the main highlight of your living room. Paintings and sculptures make very good topics for conversation and tea parties. You may also choose to frame excellent paintings of artistic family members instead. Place one or two mild halogen spotlights that focus on the pieces. Rugs will also have the same effect especially if you’re planning to invest in imported ones with very eccentric and artistic designs.

Bigger Accessories

4. Chandelier. A huge hanging chandelier is one surefire way to make your living room come to life. Choose the size and design that best fits your living room. Crystal chandeliers provide a very elegant atmosphere perfect for contemporary and modern living rooms. Antique and rustic ones made of iron or brass are great for Victorian and traditional designs.

Other light fixtures are also indispensable accessories that are especially useful in the evening. Wall sconces, table lamps and standalone lamps can be great additions to the room. Learn how to balance light distribution effective. Choose designs and colors that will compliment the overall tone of the living room for a very dramatic effect.

5. Piano. A piano is both aesthetic and functional. It can serve as the single décor of your living room. Choose whether you want a grand piano or a smaller model that you can conveniently place in one area. The color should maintain the integrity of your main theme as well so feel free to experiment between classic black, classic white and other earth tones that wooden pianos have. You can also place a small green plant on top or at the side for added contrast.

A rug is one of the most influential components in your living room. Depending on the size, style and shape that you choose, the room will also display a rather similar aura. A living room rug is also functional since it can absorb noise and has great texture. With so many available options, you need some guidelines in order to choose the right one.

Comparing the Rug and Your Living Room

Do you want the rug to be the main highlight of the room or would you prefer it complimenting other decors and fixtures? Oriental rugs and others with very dramatic designs and styles usually grab a lot of attention so these are the right choices if you have neutral wall colors and simple decorations. Fur rugs are also very catchy and can serve as a source of warmth and beauty.

However, if you prefer to put emphasize on other great items in your living room like a chandelier, paintings or your sofa, you may want to pick rugs with more subdued patterns. Choose colors that provide a nice contrast with your quality decors and pieces. White, beige and brown will look with adequate lighting from your beautiful chandelier or tall French windows.

Give attention to color and pattern. A simple rule to follow is that at least one color of the rug compliments the colors of other things in your living room. If you have a solid white sofa with dark wood trims, you can invest in brown fur rugs or solid gray ones that brings out the sofa better. The color rule can also be applied effectively on floors. Make a nice contrast with your floor color. The floor-rug separation will create a more symmetrical appearance.

As for the shape of your living room rug, make sure that there is enough floor space around it. Avoid getting very big rugs which you may need to fold at certain ends since it already hits the wall. Measure the dimensions of the room first then find a rug with the right proportions that will cover the area you like adequately. The fabric of the rug may also be determined by the type of flooring you have. If your floor is patterned, plainer rugs are recommended and vice-versa.

Other Things to Consider

How many rugs do you need? A single rug will make a very nice and clean appearance. A large living room can be separated by two or more rugs. You may allocate different highlights for each area you’re separating. The color and patterns should stay consistent and complimentary to prevent the room from looking cluttered. When using more than one rug, one should have the largest size. This will be your focal point or area. Choose complimentary rugs that will maintain the consistency and integrity of the whole living room.

Check the durability of your rug as well. There are rug types that last longer compared to others like wool. You may want to pick materials that are easier to clean if you have pets or children at home. Ask for a trial period from your dealer to check the rug thoroughly. Assess the material, dye quality and size. If you’re getting a foreign expensive rug, check the labels certified by the Federal Trade Commission to know which country it came from.

Majority of households—especially those who are executives and those who don’t have small kids at home—prefer formal living rooms because this exudes sophistication and class. Before, a formal living room—which was known as the parlor or drawing room where meetings usually take place—is considered as the main highlight of the house because this is where the finest and most expensive possessions of the homeowners are showcased and displayed.

Technically, a formal living room should be composed of ceiling that has two storeys and adjacent to the dining room and to the foyer. This should also have an exquisite set of tall windows that come in classy design. The décors should come in symmetrical forms and the treatments in the windows or ceilings should involve fabrics that are opulent, trimmed, braided, or fringed.

But today, there can be variations when it comes to designing a formal living room. In fact, more and more people prefer formal living rooms that have lesser “formal look.” This is done by retaining the basic elements like intricate and heavy fabrics and using window treatments that come in light shades and furniture pieces that are more comfortable.

How to design a formal living room

If you want to create a formal living room in your own abode, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the basics of designing one. Make sure that you know what are the pieces of furniture to be used and the kind of fabric that will match these furniture pieces. And since formal living rooms are all about symmetry of design, make sure that you know the proper placing of decors and other decorations to complete the space. The following distinguishing factors may help you to achieve the formal living room that will match your taste, style, and preference.

Formal yet friendly. To create a satisfying formal living room, make sure that it contains elements of the traditional formal living that comes with more comfortable furniture pieces. To make the living room friendlier, try to use color combinations that are bright. Vivid colors such as blue, red, and khaki may do this.

Highlighting the positive. In formal living rooms, make sure that the decors and furniture pieces are highlighted carefully. For example, a fireplace should be that main accent of the wall. This should be complemented with furnishings or draperies that come in rich and heavy trimmed fabrics.

Complementing colors. Color is very important to achieve a beautiful formal living room. They should come in vivid colors to accentuate major furniture pieces. To make it more interesting and unique, try to intersect the colors to achieve an eye-catching effect.

Here’s a step-by-step procedure to create a simple formal living room.

1. Place the sofa where the fireplace and television are both viewed.

2. Near the fireplace, place a pair of chairs flanks that come in shades of green.

3. Place an antique grandfather clock on one corner and a tall plant in one corner to balance it.

4. Put a stepstool beside one of the chairs that will serves as a side table.

5. Place a floor lamp beside the other chair to balance the stepstool.

6. On the mantel, place at least two model ships to exude an intense statement.

7. To complete the formal living room, use vibrant window treatments and make sure that these colors are above an average person’s eye level.
